My inbox has been inundated over the past few days with last minute emails shouting things like "you can order and get it by Christmas!" or "still looking for the perfect gift????" I ignored them all because I really hate shopping. And I chose this year to move away from the crazy commercialism of the holidays and plan my giving in other ways. Like the gift of time spent with my Mom, who's 87 and home bound. The gift of sharing my favorite music. I even gave tree seedlings to family members this year that will be planted in US National Forests. I mean really, did they need another sweater or mug or tree ornament?
I kept thinking about that phrase, the perfect gift. What exactly is that?
My thoughts turned to a few friends whose Christmas celebrations this year are shadowed by the loss of loved ones, struggles with illness, financial woes. And I was reminded that the gift of the human spirit is more priceless than any fancy bauble wrapped in fancy paper. Gifts don't need to sit nestled in a box, tied with a string. They don't need to be expensive or shiny and new.
How about a simple act of kindness? A phone call, checking in. A card in the mail. A quick text letting someone know, hey I'm out here, thinking about you.
As they often do, those thoughts turned into a song.
Be the someone who is out there, waiting.
Who knows, there might be someone out there waiting for you, too.
Be the gift.
